In an atmosphere evocative and stimulating made of vivid stories, discover all those little unknown wonders of the Eternal City that are hidden in the shadow of Rome’s most famous monuments. We will live the authentic face of Rome: not the postcard kind, but the genuine places of Rome!
We start with the remains of the Theatre of Marcellus and the little archaeological area linked to the monument, the so called portico of Octavia and following the roman street we will get the jewish Ghetto. The ghetto was active for over three centuries from 1555, the year of its birth by Pope Paul IV, until 1883 when it was finally abolished and the area redeveloped. The historic homes, that were crowded with thousands of Jewish citizens, are now disappeared, but the ghetto is still one of the most typical places of the city.
Passing Fabricio bridge we reach the Tiberina Island, the little island surrounded by the river Tiber, to discover the long History of this “healing” center: from its origins when the Romans erected a temple of the god of medicine Aesculapius, to the hospital Fatebenefratelli and the medieval Basilica of St. Bartholomew. Inside the basilica we find remains from every era, such as the cannon ball crashed in a wall in memory of the Roman Republic of 1848. we will enjoy a suggestive view of the most ancient bridges of Rome.
Our next stop will be Trastevere district: we’ll see the Church of St. Crisogono, with its underground levels an intricate hidden world just below the surface of the modern streets. and from there we walk among the alleys of the neighborhood to the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, a special place that combines the wonders of the medieval works of art with the mystical atmosphere of the oldest church to be dedicated to Virgin Mary. The main point of interest of Church will be the amazing series of mosaics by Pietro Cavallini, one of the best preserved and finest mosaics of the Eternal City and exceptional work that brings great emotion like few other highlights of Rome.
But the surprises do not end here; we will take a walk to get the fornarina’s House, and the Borgia’s gate to enjoy tales and secrets of Rome.
